빛이 빚은 곡선 : 시작과 끝의 중첩

“모든 끝은 시작의 이면이며, 모든 어둠은 빛의 산통(産痛)이다.”

우리는 지평선 너머로 해가 기울 때 그것을 ‘종말’이라 부르고, 새벽의 첫 빛이 차오를 때 비로소 ‘시작’이라 명명합니다. 하지만 우주의 거대한 호흡 안에서 일출과 일몰은 단절된 두 사건이 아닙니다. 지구의 한 면이 어둠에 잠길 때 반대편은 찬란한 빛을 맞이하듯, 존재의 시작과 끝은 영원히 순환하는 하나의 숨결로 연결되어 있습니다. 이번 전시 <중첩된 시간> 시리즈는 이처럼 분절할 수 없는 시간의 연속성을 곡선과 색채의 층위로 기록한 시각적 사유의 결과물입니다.

작품 속 겹겹이 쌓인 곡선들은 선형적인 시간의 흐름을 거부합니다. 어느 지점이 태동이고 어느 지점이 소멸인지 분간할 수 없는 모호한 경계는, 우리에게 ‘세계를 정의하는 것은 객관적인 풍경이 아니라 우리의 인식’임을 나직이 속삭입니다. 빛이 머물다 떠난 자리, 그 굴곡진 틈새에 새겨진 다층적인 색채는 각기 다른 존재들이 조화를 이루어가는 과정이며, 곧 우리 삶의 초상입니다.

Curve created by light: overlap of beginning and end

"Every end is the other side of the beginning, and all darkness is the colic (産痛) of light."

We call it 'the end' when the sun is tilted over the horizon, and we call it 'the beginning' when the first light of dawn comes up. But in the great breath of the universe, sunrise and sunset are not two disconnected events. Just as one side of the earth is in darkness and the other side faces brilliant light, the beginning and end of existence are connected by a single breath that circulates forever.

This exhibition, The Overlapped Time series, is the result of visual thinking that records the continuity of time that cannot be segmented in layers of curves and colors. The layered curves in the work reject the linear passage of time. The ambiguous boundary, which cannot distinguish which point is the birth and which point is the extinction, whispers to us that 'it is not an objective landscape but our perception that defines the world'. The place where the light stayed and left, the multi-layered colors engraved in the curved gap, are a process in which different beings harmonize, and are the portraits of our lives.
